Robert Sylvester Kelly was born in Chicago, Illinois on January 8, 1967. He was born to a single mother named Joanne. He has three other siblings and was raised as a Baptist. In 1981, he went to Kenwood Academy in Chicago where his music teacher approached him to perform a Stevie Wonder classic. When in school, he used to play basketball.
