Then this songwriter and singer from Essex made it big in the music world through her win in the 12th edition of the UK music reality show, The X Factor. In fact, she had unsuccessfully auditioned the previous year for Britain’s got talent and failed to make through the first round as she was not prepared and was too young according to her own words.
But The X Factor proved to be her stepping stone to success. Rita Ora one of the judges was impressed by her singing and mentored her throughout. Some of the songs that led on the path to the top were James Bay’s “Let It Go,” Michael Jackson’s “Billy Jean,” and Aretha Franklin’s “Respect”.
She auditioned for the show with “Who’s Lovin’ You” by The Jackson 5. Since it’s a difficult song to sing, needless to say, she bowled over the judges and made her entry into The X Factor a sure thing. She, in fact, got a standing ovation her rendering of this song. She progressed to “boot camp” with this song. At “boot camp”, she ran Proud Mary in the first challenge and Lay Me Down in the next and got into the six-chair challenge. It was by this time that Rita Ora started mentoring her. At the six-chair challenge, she sang “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” by Jennifer Hudson and got through to the next round.
Her rendition of “Respect” by Aretha Franklin before Ora and Meghan Trainor at LA for judges’ houses garnered her attention from the media. With this, she went on to perform live together with Lauren Murray and Kiera Weathers. Eventually, she got selected to the final, the only female in the Competition. She got a chance to sing a duet with her mentor, Ora on 12th December 2015. The very next day marked her rendition of the cover of “Forever Young” by Bob Dylan which won her the winner title of the show.
Though Johnson has not been much forthcoming about her personal life, wanting to keep her professional and personal life separate, she was rumoured to be with West Ham footballer Reece Oxford. However, she revealed later that she was already dating someone who was not from the industry. Now it is public news that she moved in with her boyfriend Daniel Elliott who is a recruiter.
She is very close to her parents too, particularly her father.
Johnson does her bit for the society too. A portion of the proceeds from her first single, the cover of “Forever Young” will go towards helping kids with life threatening conditions and also a hospice for children named, Shooting Star Chase.
