He was the most famous blues musician of his time and was officially introduced to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.
Riley B King was born in Mississippi on 16th September 1925 to sharecroppers, Albert and Nora Ella King. At a very young age, King was attracted to music. He used to sing in the church choir group. He eventually learned to play the guitar and aspired to be a radio musician. Finally, in the year 1943, King left his hometown to play guitar with the St. John’s Quartet of Inverness, Mississippi and used to perform in local churches.
He slowly started gaining popularity in 1948, after he started to perform on Sonny Boy Williamson’s radio program in West Memphis. His nickname B.B King was conceived after he started to work as a disc jockey and singer and was nicknamed as “Beale Street Blues Boy” later shortened to “Blues Boy”.
B.B King left the world at the age of 89 on 14th May 2015. He was diagnosed with high blood pressure and diabetes and passed away in his sleep.
B.B King’s musical career started in 1949 when he started to record songs under the contract with RPM records. Before that, he had also worked for Bullet Records but could not gain much recognition. He eventually put together his own music band- The B.B King Review.
King gained popularity in 1952 with his song “3 O’Clock Blues” which topped the Billboard Rhythm and Blues chart.
