Sigurd Jonny Hansen, famously known all over the world as Sig Hansen was born in the year 1966. He is the son of Sverre Hansen and has two brothers namely Edgar and Norman. Sigurd comes from a lineage of fishermen from Norway, and his father and his grandfather were the pioneers of opilio crab fishing; an activity that is done in Alaska. This was a way to enable people to make money. Sigurd started finish at a very tender age of 14 years. He used a family boat for his fishing activities. After graduating from high school, he embarked in fishing all year round.
Sigurd Hansen started off as a deckhand working on his father’s boat while he was still young. At the age of 22 years, he became a ‘Relief skipper’ whereby he used to relief other captains from duty, and he would take charge of the Northwestern. Alongside this responsibility, he also took part in short-haul stints using other boats.
It was until he turned 24 years old that he became a full-time Northwestern captain. Ever since the Northwestern came to be, it has had a record of being the safest boat, and this has led to many people trusting it with their lives. As compared to other boats again, the number of cases reported concerning serious injuries are relatively lower. For over twenty years, there has never been any questionable doubt about the boat. The Northwestern boat won the final derby seasons of King Crab in 2005 and Opilio in 2006.
As of 2011, Sigurd became the boat’s full-time captain, and he has been doing a great job in keeping the safety records higher. In 2010, Sigurd wrote a book with the help of Mark Sundeen called North by Northwestern: A Seafaring Family on Deadly Alaskan Waters.
