Popular American chef, publisher, editor, and radio & TV personality, Christopher Kimball, was born on June 5th, 1951. He was born to Mary White and Edward Norris Kimball in Westchester County, New York. He is a graduate of Colombia University, with a degree in Primitive Art.
Kimball’s early career began after he graduated from Colombia University. He began with working in a publishing company with a family member. Soon after that, he started taking cooking classes. With the assistance of family and friends and $100,000 in investments, Kimball kicked off Cook’s Machine in 1980, at the age of 29. He sold the magazine in 1989 and began with other publishing ventures.
Kimball co-founded and is an editor & publisher of America’s Test Kitchen, which produces both TV shows as well as publishes magazines. Among the published magazines are Cook’s Illustrated, which was launched by Kimball in 1993, and Cook’s Country Magazine, which was launched in 2004. What sets Kimball’s company apart from rivals’ is that its revenue comes from readers and not advertisers.
Kimball has also hosted the Public TV cooking shows, Cook’s Country from America’s Test Kitchen and America’s Test Kitchen. In November of 2015, Kimball was announced to be departing from America’s Test Kitchen.
Although the 2016 programs aired with Kimball as host, due to being pre-filmed, Kimball’s participation with their company was ending immediately. After his departure, Kimball was faced with some legal troubles as the company behind America’s Test Kitchen sued him for ‘literally and conceptually ripping off’ his former employer.
Kimball however, had already started a new project, Christopher Kimball’s Milk Street. This venture was the main reason for the lawsuit as his former employers claimed he had funded and fed his new project with resources, recipes, and database from America’s Test Kitchen.
Aside from TV shows and publishing magazines, Kimball is the author of several books. The Cook’s Bible, Dear Charlie, and Fannie’s Last Supper are all some of his books. He also contributes his writing to the New York Daily News.
Kimball has been in three different marriages. His second marriage to Adrienne Kimball in 1987 produced four children, a son, and three daughters. The pair, however, split in 2012. His third marriage, to Melissa Lee Baldine, took place in June of 2013. Baldine is the executive producer of the TV show America’s Test Kitchen. Kimball and Baldini have one child together.
Christopher Kimball has been nominated four times for the Daytime Emmy Awards. He was nominated once for America’s Test Kitchen in 2010 and 3 times in 2011; one nomination for Cook’s Country From America’s Test Kitchen, and two nominations for America’s Test Kitchen.
