Gregg Charles Popovich is an American basketball coach. He is popularly called coach Pop or Pop. He is currently the coach for National Basketball Association (NBA)’s San Antonio Spurs. He has been active in his present career since 1973. Gregg Popovich was born on January 28, 1949, in East Chicago, Indiana, U.S. He was born to a Croatian mother and a Serbian father. He attended the Merrillville High School.
In 1970, he graduated from the United States Air Force Academy with a Bachelor’s degree in Soviet Studies. During his studies, he was on the basketball team. In his final year, he became captain of the team and the team’s leading scorer. After completion, he received training for Intelligence gathering and processing. He has intended to pursue a career with the Central Intelligence Agency. He served his mandatory 5 years with the United States Air Force. In 1972, he was invited to the United States Olympics Basketball trails.
Gregg Popovich is married to Erin. They have two children. Gregg Popovich became an assistant coach at the Air Force Academy in 1973. He was assistant coach till 1979. When he was still the assistant coach, he studied to acquire a degree in physical education and sports sciences from the University of Denver. In the same 1979, he became the head coach for Pomona Pitzer’s Men’s team. During his tenure as head coach, the team won its first outright title in 68 years. He headed the team till 1988.
From 1988 to 1992, Gregg became the top assistant coach for the San Antonio Spurs. He worked with Larry Brown, a coach he had been studying under for some time. In 1992, Gregg served temporarily under Don Nelson as an assistant coach after the entire staff of San Antonio Spurs were fired by owner, Red McCombs.
In 1994, Gregg returned to San Antonio Spurs as general manager and Vice president of basketball operations. At that time, the team was under a new management. The new owner was Peter Holt. During the 1996- 1997 season, Gregg Popovich fired the head coach, Bob Hill and became Head Coach. In 2002, Gregg relinquished his position as general manager to the team’s head scout, R.C Bufford.
He has been serving as the San Antonio Spur’s head coach till present. Gregg was on the U.S national team’s coaching staff in 2002. He was also on the coaching staff for the 2004 Olympic games where the team won a bronze medal. He was also named the next head coach of the U.S national team. He will head the team from 2017 to 2020.
Gregg Popovich led the San Antonio Spurs to win five championships: 1999, 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2014. Gregg was named NBA coach of the year 2003, 2012 and 2014. In 2006, he won his 500th career victory making him the fourth fastest coach to achieve that. In 2013, he also became the second head coach in NBA history to win 900 regular games with one team. He achieved that feat with the San Antonio Spurs. In 2014, he received the Red Auerbach Trophy for winning the NBA Coach of the year for the third time. He won several other significant awards.
