Cecile Richards is an American activist and president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America. Since 2006 she is also the president of the Planned Parenthood Action Fund. In 2010 Cecile was elected as board of trustees of Ford Foundation.
Cecile Richards was born in Waco, Texas on 15 July 1957 to David Richards and Ann Richards. Her mother Ann was an activist and politician. Ann was the 45th governor of Texas, she was the second woman who holds this position. David was a lawyer and won several landmark cases. He practiced for civil rights plaintiffs, labor union, newspapers, etc. Cecile started her education in the public school, when she was in 9th standard she wore a black armband to protest against Vietnam War.
After that she was disciplined by the school then she attended progressive St. Stephen’s Episcopal School for high schooling. Her parents were actively involved in politics that is why she was inclined towards politics from her early years. When Cecile was 16 years old, she helped her mother for Sarah Weddington campaign. In 1980, Cecile earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Brown University. After completing her graduation Richards became a labor organizer for service workers. Cecil has run union campaigns for nursing home workers, garment workers and janitors during these days. At the age of 30, she helped her mother in the campaign for governor. Cecile married to Kirk Adams who is a labor organizer with the Service Employees International Union. She is living happily with her husband Kirk Adams and three children in the New York City.
Currently, Cecile is the president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America and Planned Parenthood Action Fund. These organizations are working to build a healthier and safer world for women, young people and marginalized communities from past more than 100 years. Planned Parenthood has more than 600 affiliate centers across the nation which is providing health care services and sex education to millions of people every year. Being president Cecile has ensured that Planned Parenthood played a pivotal role in shaping the health care services under the Affordable Care Act. Cecile is the board member of Ford Foundation which is a global foundation with the aim of human welfare. Cecile also founded America Votes to coordinate and promote progressive issues. Cecile has worked for many charitable and welfare organizations such as Turner Foundation, Texas Freedom Network etc. during her career. She founded Texas Freedom Network to counter Christian rights. Richards also received Puffin / Nation Prize for Creative Citizenship in 2010 and was on the list of 100 Most Influential People in the World by Time magazine in 2012.
