Steven Adler was named Michael Coletti by his parents. He was born on January 22, 1965, in Cleveland, Ohio, United States. His father is an Italian- American also named Michael Coletti and his mother is a Jewish- American named Deanna. His father left the family and his mother moved to Los Angeles with all her children. It was at that time that Michael was renamed to Steven Adler.
His name had to be changed to conform to the Jewish tradition. According to the Jewish tradition, people cannot be named after someone who is still alive hence his name had to be changed from Michael to Steven. He then took the surname of his stepfather, Melvin Adler.
Steven lived with his mother, stepfather, older brother, Kenny, and younger half-brother, Jamie in the San Fernando Valley until he turned 13. He was sent to his grandparents in Hollywood for bad behaviour. He started the Bancroft Junior High School but returned to San Fernando to complete Junior High. He learned to play drums whiles still in high school.
He returned to Hollywood, after a failed audition, he formed a band called Road Crew. He formed the band with his friend whom he met at Bancroft Junior High, Saul Hudson now Slash. They were joined by bassist Duff McKagan. The band was later dissolved when they could not find a lead vocalist. He joined a band called Hollywood Rose which featured Axl Rose and Izzy Stradlin.
In 1985, Steven joined newly formed Guns N’ Roses which included his old colleagues from Hollywood Rose, Axl Rose, and Izzy Stradlin. The band was also largely made up of members from L.A Guns. The band played at several nightclubs and was eventually signed on to Geffen Records in March 1986.
