John Richard Baldwin popularly known as John Paul Jones is an English composer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and arranger. He is one of the most recognized bassists in the world. He is best known as the bassist for the rock band, Led Zeppelin. Jones plays several other instruments including violin, cello, organ, guitar, mandolin, and koto.
John Paul Jones was born on January 3, 1946, in Sidcup, Kent, England. His parents were into music. His father, Joe Baldwin, was a pianist and arranger. He started playing Piano at age six. John Paul attended Christ’s college, Black heath, London. He had to attend a boarding school because his parents were often touring to promote their music career. He studied music in school. He became a choirmaster and an organist at a local church at the tender age of 14.

John Paul Jones first joined a band called the Deltas. He was 15 at that time. He later played the bass guitar for London Jazz rock called Jetts Black. His music career soared after he was hired by Jet Harris and Tony Meehan. They were members of the then-popular group called the Shadows. He was hired in 1962. They later considered him as a replacement for the group’s bassist, Brain Locking who left the group. The Shadows, however, chose John Rostill.

He later met Jimmy page, a member of the band named “The Yardbirds”. Later the band broke up and Jones joined Jimmy Page to work. The group was later joined by vocalist Robert Plant and drummer John Bonham. The new group was initially named “The New Yardbbirds” but it was later changed to Led Zeppelin. The group released nine studio albums, four live albums, fifteen singles, nine compilation albums and three video albums. Led Zeppelin dissolved in 1980 after the death of drummer John Bonham.
Jones collaborated with several artists including “Jars of Clay”, “The Harp Consort”, “Cinderella”, “The Mission”, and “Uncle Earl”. He released his first solo album titled “Zooma” in September 1999. His next solo album titled “The Thunderthief” in 2001.
