American musician and songwriter John William Oates is most popularly recognized for his act with his Hall & Duo partner, Daryl Hall. He was primarily the guitarist as part of the duo but co-wrote several songs such as She’s Gone, Out of Touch, Sara Smile, Maneater, You Make My Dreams and more. He was also the lead vocalist on a number of singles like Possession Obsession, You’ve Lost that Lovin’ Feelin’ and How Does It Feel to Be Back. Oates was born on April 7, 1948 in New York City, New York, to parents Ann De Palma and Al Oates. He has Italian and Moorish heritage. Oates was raised in North Wales, Pennsylvania.
He attended Philadelphia’s Temple University after graduating from the North Penn High School in Pennsylvania in 1966. This is where he met senior Daryl Hall and formed a duo that participated in several college bands.
Oates dropped out of college and chose to pursue a career in music instead of a degree in journalism.

Oates finally released his solo album, Phunk Shui in 2002. He then collaborated with Jamie Cullen for the Handsome Boy Modeling School’s song, Greatest Mistake, for the White People album of 2004. 1000 Miles of Life, his second album was released in 2008. He then collaborated with The Bird and the Bee, the indie rock band, to perform a medley of the former as well as Hall & Oates.
Oates released his third studio album, Mississippi Mile in 2011, followed by Good Road To Follow in 2013. He also released three live albums, 2004’s John Oates; Live at the Historic Wheeler Opera House, 2006’s John Oates Solo – The Album, The Concert and 2012’s The Bluesville Sessions.
