James William Buffett was born in Pascagoula, Mississippi on December 25, 1946. He was born to parents James Delaney Buffett, Jr. and Mary Lorraine. He was raised in Mobile, Alabama. His grandfather was a sailor and he was exposed to sailing since he was a child. He went to St. Ignatius School and used to play trombone in his school band. He then moved to Fairhope, Alabama and completed his graduation in 1964 from McGill Institute for Boys.
He first attended Auburn University and when in there, he used to play guitar. Following this, he went to Pearl River Community College and then later attended the University of Southern Mississippi located in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. In 1969, he earned his bachelor’s degree in history and was the member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. Following his graduation, he used to work for Billboard magazine as a correspondent in Nashville.
