Euphonik is a Disc Jockey, music producer as well as the radio presenter. He is well known for playing House music, a genre of electronic music that was created by club DJs and music producers in Chicago in the early 1980s.
Euphonik was born on the twenty-first of December, 1983 in Mpumalanga, South Africa. He lived in different places in South Africa – Likazi, Klerksdorp, Benoni. His father’s interest in music passed on to him also.
He loved the music of Marvin Gaye, The Spinners, High Madekela and Stimela. This passion for music saw him take up DJing in his late teens. He became well known in the local clubs. His mixes started getting chosen for broadcasting on the regional radio station, YFM. Eventually, he got the opportunity of hosting his own shows on 5FM, the national radio station.
It was his DJing that saw him rise to fame and popularity. In 2004, he produced an album, Kentphonik along with a friend, DJ Kent. While he was working with YFM, he was also signed by Soul Candi, a record label in 2006. Once he started on 5FM in 2006, he had two weekly shows. He had new music and mixes from other Disc Jockeys across South Africa and even abroad for his Saturday show known as Ultimax Weekend Edition. This show serves as a platform for other DJs to showcase their talent on national radio. However, this show came to a close in 2014. He uses his Sunday show, My House to showcase popular house tunes from across the world.
Euphonik is not a well-known figure in South Africa alone. He has travelled to various countries to stage shows there. He has played his music in countries such as Miami, New York, Ibiza, UK, Spain and even Dubai. Needless to say, he has travelled all around South Africa. He has shared the stage with popular singers like Avicii, Deadmau5, Louie Vega, Swedish House Mafia etc.
It is to be noted that his song with DJ Fresh and Nyanda, “Cool and Deadly” was number one on the 5FM Top 40 in 2013.
Though he has not cared much for awards, he has been nominated many times at the South African Music Awards and the Metro FM Music Awards. He won his first award for Best Compilation for his album For The Love of House Volume 5 in 2014. He was nominated for Remix of the Year for his song, “Hallelujah Anyway” in 2014 and For The Love of House Volume 6; as well as for Song of The Year for ‘Busa’ in 2015.
DJ Euphonik is a DJ preneur as he calls himself, a DJ as well as an entrepreneur. He has invested in around fourteen properties in Johannesburg, South Africa. He has also collaborated with the Italian shoe company, Superga and has brought out a limited edition Euphonic sneaker. Again in 2013, they brought out a black and gold high-top Euphonic Superga sneaker. They will be launching yet another pair in 2015. Euphonik definitely believes in paying it forward. He conducts a one-day workshop for DJs called DJ-101 every year. In the workshop, he shares his experience and knowledge about the music industry to aspiring DJs. He also chooses two aspiring DJs who are on their way up from around the country and teaches them all about the DJ world through his one-year Mentorship Programme called, Phuture DJs. At the end of the year, he produces a CD along with his trainees and releases them and promotes them.
