Thomas Edison was the founder of General Electric, and he was a businessman. Thomas was known as America’s greatest inventor. He was the one behind inventing the phonograph which was used for recording and reproduction of sounds. Thomas was one of the first people in the world to use the business concept, mass production, which is producing very large amounts of standardized products.
Thomas Alva Edison was born on February 11, 1847 in the village, Milan, Ohio, United States of America. His father, Samuel Ogden Edison, Jr was a captain that fought in the war between the United States, the United Kingdom and he died in 1896. His mother was Nancy Matthews Elliott, she died in 1871. In 1854, when Edison was around 7 years old, the family moved to Port Huron, Michigan, and that’s where Thomas grew.
Thomas Edison’s first marriage was to Mary Stilwell in 1871, she was only 16 years old. They had 3 children, Thomas Alva Edison Jr. died in 1935, Marion Estelle Edison died in 1965 and William Leslie Edison he also was an inventor but died in 1878. On August 9, 1884, at the age of 29, Mary Stilwell died, doctors said that she might have gotten poisoned by morphine.
After 2 years of Mary’s death, in 1886 Thomas married Mina Miller they also had 3 children, Theodore Miller Edison was a well-known American businessman that died in 1992, Charles Edison was a businessman, inventor and the Governor of New Jersey that died in 1969, and Madeleine Edison died in 1979. Mina Miller stayed with Thomas Edison until his death.
On October 18, 1931, in his house, Llewellyn Park, New Jersey, complications of diabetes was the reason behind Thomas Edison’s death.
When Thomas Edison was young he worked in different niches and companies including, Western Union and News agency. Thomas invented the Phonograph in 1877 and people felt crazy about it and he got very popular for that that he became a celebrity. After a year, in 1878 Thomas went to Washington to present the Phonograph he invented in front of the United States president, the congressmen and the senators, people described him as a genius.
Thomas sold the Quadruplex telegraph to Western Union and that was Thomas’s major financial success. After that, Thomas invented the incandescent lightbulb and it was very successful so he founded the Edison Electric Light Company. Thomas also worked on enhancing telephone’s microphone and for that he developed the Carbon microphone. He also invented the electric lamps, which we all use an enhanced version of them in our homes, companies and streets.
Thomas also worked in mining and he founded Edison Ore Milling Company but the company failed. In 1901 Thomas founded Edison Storage Battery Company which produced batteries for many uses including electric vehicles. He also co-founded Edison Botanic Research Corp along with Harvey Firestone and Henry Ford.
