Whitman was born on August 4, 1956 in Cold Spring Harbor, New York to parents Margaret Cushing and Hendricks Hallett Whitman Jr. She went to the Cold Spring Harbor High School and graduated three years later in 1974. She was a bright student and was in the top 10 of her class.
She pursued Math and Science in Princeton University, aiming to become a doctor. A summer spent selling advertisements for a magazine changed her mind about the career path she wanted to pursue. She then took up studying Economics and graduated with a B.A. Donors degree in 1977. She then attended the Harvard Business School in 1979, where she acquired an M.B.A.
Whitman is currently married to Griffith Harsh IV since 1980 and has two sons. She has been residing in Atherton, California since 1998.
As a brand manager for Procter & Gamble, Whitman first started her career in 1979. She then worked for Bain & Company as a consultant and eventually became the senior vice president there. In 1989, she took on the role of vice president at The Walt Disney Company.
