Iyanla Vanzant was born Rhonda Eva Harris. She is an American lawyer, author, inspirational speaker, life coach and TV personality. She is best known for her books, her shows including “Iyanla: Fix My Life” and her regular appearances on the “Oprah Winfrey Show”.
Iyanla Vanzant was born on September 13, 1953, in Brooklyn, New York, United States. her parents are Sarah Jefferson, a maid, and Horace Harris, a petty thief. Her father has not been present in her life. her mother died in 1957 from breast cancer. She was raised by her father’s relatives and was raped by one of them when she was nine years old. She was ordained as a priestess in her tradition, Yoruba. That was where she got the name Iyanla which is translated as “Great Mother”. She attended the City University of New York School of Law.
Iyanla first married Kirk, the marriage did not work out. She then married Charles Vanzant, that marriage also lasted for only six years. In the same year, “The Spirit of a Man: A Vision of Transformation for Black Men and the Women Who Love Them” was released. In 1998, she wrote “Faith in the Valley: Lessons for Women on the Journey to Peace”.
In the same year, “Yesterday, I Cried: Celebrating the Lessons of Living and Loving” was released. That was followed by “One Day My Soul Just Opened Up: 40 Days and 40 Nights Toward Spiritual Strength and Personal Growth”. Iyanla wrote other books including “Acts of Faith: Medications for People of Color”, “Value in the Valley: A Black Woman’s Guide Through Life’s Dilemmas”, “Iyanla Vanzant”, “Until Today”, “A Woman Knows Things” and “Peace from Broken Pieces: How to Get Through What You’re Going Through”.
She also hosted the “Iyanla” TV show from 2001 to 2002. She was also the season 2 and 3 hosts for “Starting Over, Life Coach”. Iyanla is a regular guest on Oprah Winfrey’s “Oprah Lifeclass” since 2011 and a host for OWN’s “Iyanla, Fix My Life”.
