Tillakaratne Mudiyanselage Dilshan was born on 14 October 1976 in Kalutara, Sri Lanka. He was following Islam from birth but later converted into Buddhism at an early age of 16. He was named as Tuwan Mohammad Dilshan but later after converting his religion, he changed his name as Tillakaratne Dilshan. However, he has a number of other nicknames as Dilee, Mr. Pallekele, Dilscoop. His father was a Malay and his mother a Sinhalese who later separated and Dilshan, along with his brothers and sisters came along with the mother.
She raised and brought up the children alone. Thus, all of them follows their mother’s religion from their childhood. Dilshan was inclined towards sports and much towards cricket as said his childhood coach Ranjan Paranavitana. His brother, Tillakaratne Sampath is also a first class cricketer in Sri Lanka representing Ruhana, Tamil Union cricket and Badurelia sports club.
The married life didn’t go very well in the initial days of Dilshan due to which he and his wife, Nilanka Vithanage got a divorce after few years of marriage. They have a child named, Resadu Tillakaratne. However, after the divorce Nilanka filed a case regarding the custody of his child and monthly payments from Dilshan for herself and for the son’s future.
The consequence of which, Dilshan pays around 200,000 LKR every month to his ex-wife and son. Later he married again and this time with a Sri Lankan actress, Manjula Thilini. With his second wife, he has two daughters namely, Resandi Linama Tillakaratne and Lasadi Dihasansa Tillakaratne and a son, Dihela Dinhath Tillakaratne. The marriage between the two was celebrated during the IPL series in the year 2008.
Being a studious kid since childhood, he went to Jaffna Sinhala Madya Maha Vidyalaya in Jaffna and then at Kalutara Vidyalaya. At the same school, he started developing interest towards cricket and from this place, he begins his cricket career as a teenager.

With his fantastic career of around two decedes and being one of the greatest batsman and captains in the history of Sri Lanka, Dilshan has achieved quite a lot. Although the exact figure is not known, it is estimated that the net worth of Dilshan accounts to be around $10.5 million US dollars as of 2017. The way he is still doing in his career, no wonder his net worth will elevate in the coming days.
Beyond cricket, Dilshan is working and proving himself worth in every other field as well. During August 2015, the then President of Sri Lanka Maithripala Sirisena appointed him and another cricket player, Muttiah Muralitharan as the brand ambassadors for the Presidential Task Force to combat kidney disease. He and his fellow ambassador are doing quite well for the cause. Dilshan made his new fashion line and named it as Dilscoop, after his master-stroke playing form. He even models his fashion line.
Another business in which Dilshan got involved is his Hotel ‘D pavilion Inn’. He inaugurated his small-scale luxury hotel on 23rd October 2014 which is situated at Stafford lane in Kalpana. President Mahindra Rajapakse also honored the occasion with his presence. Not just this, he is also helping his actress wife Manjula in the making of some of her video albums. He even accompanies his wife released a video song titled Hema Sansaraye, after retiring from international cricket.
With the right-hand batting style and right arm off spin bowling style, Dilshan has made history in Sri Lankan cricket by showing his unique bowling pattern. This is the reason he was nick-named as Dilscoop by his fans and fellow cricketers. This dilscoop is one of its kind bowling style in which he pitches the ball over the wicket keeper’s head became quite famous all around the cricket fans.
He was the member of his country’s team since 1999, the year when he debuted. In just his second Test he scored 163, not out. Aggressive right-hand batsman Dilshan played like a bullet in 2003 World Cup confirming his place for a long time in Sri Lankan cricket team. Also, it made him a potential choice as a captain. Sri Lanka got his first victory in the Test series against South Africa in the year 2011, which was captained by Dilshan. Although he is registered as the first batsman to hit 200 fours in T20’s but he created history by scoring 160 not out off 165 balls in One Day Internationals against India at the Bellerive Oval on 28 February 2012.
Along with Kumar Sangakkara, he managed to share a 200 run second run partnership, which is recorded as highest second wicket partnership for Sri Lanka in ODIs. Playing in such an incredible way, Dilshan was awarded as Twenty20 International Performance of the Year at the 2009 ICC Awards and Man of the Series Trophy for his individual performance when he managed to get 96 runs from just 57 balls. This match was a semi-final against West Indies.
Again in the World Cup, 2011 he was the player who is reported to be the leading run scorer and it won’t be an exaggeration to say that with his help, Sri Lankan team managed to made it to the finale. After Kumar Sangakkara resigns from cricket, the responsibility came over Dilshan.
Being quite fit for his age, he played outstandingly till 2015 and in the following year, he resigned from the T20s and One Day Internationals.

• Won Man of Series in T20s twice against West Indies and England.
• Named Man of the Match more than 20 times in various matches against India, Bangladesh, England, Zimbabwe, Pakistan, Australia, South Africa, West Indies and New Zealand
