Mahendra Singh Dhoni is one of the most successful captains the game of cricket has ever seen. “Dhoni” as he is well known by the people who admire him for the charismatic and calm nature he brings into the game has captained the Indian National Cricket Team in ODI’s (2007-2016) as well as Test Cricket (2008-2014). He is a right-hand batsman and wicketkeeper known for his aggressive batting style and lightning-quick reflexes behind the stumps.
Born on 7th July 1981 in Ranchi, Jharkhand, he is originally from a village known as Lvali in the Almora district of Uttarakhand. Son to Pan Singh and Devaki Devi, he has two siblings sister Jayanti and brother Narendra Singh Dhoni. From 2001-2003 Dhoni worked as a TTE (Traveling Ticket Examiner) at the Kharagpur railway station in Midnapore District in West Bengal. Dhoni got married to Sakshi Singh Rawat his schoolmate on 4th July 2010. They have a daughter named Ziva.
Before cricket Dhoni was a district level football and badminton player representing his school DAV Jawahar Vidya Mandir. He was a goalkeeper for his school football team.
Dhoni was sent by his football coach to play cricket for a local club in which he showed impeccable wicket keeping skills. This was the moment which was going to change his life forever. Dhoni was later selected to represent the Junior Bihar team for the 1998-99 season ultimately making his debut for the Bihar Ranji Team for the 1999-2000 season when he was just eighteen years old.
Dhoni scored his maiden century in first-class cricket for the Bihar Ranji Team during the 2000-01 season. Playing for the Jharkhand Ranji team Dhoni was selected over then international Deep Dasgupta, scoring a valorous half century but for a losing cause. He was then selected to represent the India A team for a tour of Zimbabwe and Kenya where he performed exceptionally well after which he was selected in the ODI squad for the Bangladesh tour in 2004-05. He got out for a duck on his debut for the Indian senior team. He was later selected to represent the Indian team in the test format as well.
Dhoni who was a regular in the Indian ODI, as well as test squad, was elected captain for the
ICC World T20 held in South Africa in 2007 where India were the champions. He was then elected to captain the ODI squad against Australia in 2007 and the following year was elected as the test captain against Australia due to an injury to then captain Anil Kumble. The rest as we say is history…
Dhoni went on to create milestones in cricket achieved by none. He has scored the most centuries in ODI’s at the no.7 position. Most stumpings in international cricket. Dhoni completed his plus two in 1999 from Jawahar Vidya Mandir, Shyamali, Jharkhand. Although he applied for B.com at the Gossner College, he could not complete his graduation as he was busy with cricket.
In 2008 he applied for the same three-year course at St. Xavier’s College in Ranchi but could not clear a single semester due to his cricketing commitments.
