His family helped many Tamil families by giving them space to hide in 1983 during the Black July riots. Sangakkara married his longtime girlfriend, Yehali in 2013. Together the couple has a set of twins a boy and a girl named Kavith and Swyree.
He completed his schooling and graduation from Trinity College, Kandy which is a private school for boys located in central highlands around Sri Lanka. He actively participated in sports like badminton, tennis, swimming and cricket during his time in school. His principal recommended Kumar’s mother to encourage him to play Cricket, after he continuously played cricket.
He also started representing his school in the ‘under – 13 cricket XI’ where he was coached by Upananda Jayasundera. Later he played under-15, under-17, under-19 and first XI squads, during which he was coached by Berty Wijesinghe.

Later he followed his father’s footstep by entering the ‘Law Faculty of the University of Colombo’ to complete his graduation but was unable to complete it because of his cricket commitments.
