Dinesh attended the Dhramasoka College in Ambalagonda and later moved on to Ananda College Colombo for having more opportunities in his cricketing career. He also won Schoolboy Cricketer of the year award in 2009 and is the first schoolboy cricketer to score more than 1000+ runs.
