While in high school, Carl was an outstanding student who met a specified level of participation or performance in the sports of baseball, basketball, and football, performances which earned him the distinction of being a letterman.
During the summer of his junior high school year, his coach advised him to play tournaments that featured Josh Beckett so that baseball scouts could see his talent. He was offered a scholarship by UCLA to play point guard on their basketball team as well as one to play college football at Nebraska, USC in Tulsa and Florida. He, however, turned down those scholarships so as to pursue his baseball career. His big break came in 1999 when he was drafted by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the 52nd round of the 1999 MLB draft. He batted and threw left-handed.
His major league career saw him playing for a number of teams including the Tampa Bay Devil Rays/Rays (2002–10), Boston Red Sox (2011–12), and Los Angeles Dodgers (2012–2016). On June 5, 2016, Carl was designated for assignment (the Dodgers had 10 days to put him on waivers, trade him, release him, or send him to the minors (if he agreed)) even though he had about $35 million remaining on his contract.
June 13, 2016, would see him being released by the Dodgers. He later called it quits on January 14, 2017. Of note is the fact that Carl is the only player since Arky Vaughn to reach 70 triples before the age of 26 and he is the first player since Willie Mays to win the All-Star MVP without driving in a run. Carl was voted the MVP for the Rays in 2010 by the Baseball Writers Association of America, Tampa Bay chapter, and he received the Gold Glove and Silver Slugger Awards in 2010.
His career, however, was not only about playing Major League Baseball. He was also an actor who acted in a few movies like Sunday Night Baseball (1990), 2004 MLB All-Star Game (2004), and 2007 MLB All-Star Game (2007).
