Mohanlal Vishwanathan Nair was born on 21st May 1960 in Elanthoor, a small village in Pathanamthitta district, Kerala. He was born in the house of his maternal parents. He was the youngest child in the family. His father Vishwanathan Nair was a former bureaucrat and a law secretary in Kerala government. His mother was Santhakumari, a housewife. He was brought up in his mother’s house in Mudavanamugal, Poojappura in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.
His interest in acting goes long back to his school days when he was in 6th grade. He enacted a role of a 90-year-old man in school and was recognised for his acting skills at a young age. His journey in the movies started in 1978 with Thiranottam. The movie was a self-effort made by Mohanlal and his friends, in which he made his acting debut with the role of a mentally retarded servant. The movie wasn’t released due to censorship. His first official release was Manjil Virinja Pookkal in the year 1980.
His performance as an antagonist in the movie was applauded and instantly made him a first choice for the negative roles. This helped him to appear in 25 feature films in the year 1983 itself.
