James Hugh Calum Laurie was born on 11th June 1959 in Oxford to the legendary British rowing champion and Olympic Gold Medal holder Dr. William George Ranald Mundell ‘Ran’ Laurie and Patricia Laidlaw as the youngest of four children.
Laurie attended the Dragon School as a kid then he attended the prestigious Eton College, Britain’s best known preparatory school. After that, he joined Selwyn College in Cambridge as a family tradition. He graduated from Selwyn with a degree in Anthropology and Archeology, specializing in anthropology.
Just like his father, Hugh is also a master Oarsman at his days in University. He represented Britain in 1977 Junior World Rowing Championship. He had to leave rowing after suffering from mononucleosis.
